NIOSH control technology assessment at General Tire and Rubber Company, Charlotte, North Carolina.

  An indepth survey was conducted at the General Tire and Rubber Company (SIC-3011), in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 26 to 30, 1979. The survey was conducted as part of a NIOSH study to evaluate and document effective controls for air contaminants in the tire manufacturing industry. Air samples were collected and total particulates and respirable particulates were determined. Ventilation system measurements were made, and process and work practices were observed. Unit operations evaluated were: vacuum cleaning, tilt stand charging, kaolin slurry mixing, drop mill, curing, and cement house. The OSHA permissible exposure limits (PEL) for an 8 hour time weighted average for total nuisance dust and respirable nuisance dust were 15 and 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), respectively. For petroleum distillate, benzene (71432), and toluene (108883), the OSHA PELs were 2000, 30, and 650mg/m3, respectively. All particulate and vapor concentrations were below the OSHA standards. The authors recommend that dust exposures in mixer charging be prevented to a greater degree. The practice of emptying powdered materials from rigid containers into the mixer should be stopped. The authors conclude that controls in this facility appear to be among the better controls for air contaminants in the industry.
