Description:Air samples, ventilation system measurements, and observations of process and work practices were part of a survey of air contaminant controls conducted at Uniroyal Tire Company (SIC-3011), Ardmore, Oklahoma on April 14 to 24, 1980. The facility was surveyed as part of a larger study of controls for air contaminants in tire factories conducted by NIOSH. The facility employed 2,000 workers. Air samples were collected for total particulates and respirable particulates on filters. Petroleum distillate samples were collected on charcoal tubes and were analyzed for benzene (71432), toluene (108883), m-xylene (108383), and petroleum distillate. Ventilation measurements were made for each control system. The OSHA permissible exposure limit (PEL) for nuisance dust was 15 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), and 5mg/m3 for respirable nuisance dust. For petroleum distillate, the OSHA PEL was 2000mg/m3, and for benzene, toluene, and m-xylene, the OSHA PEL was 30, 650, and 424mg/m3, respectively, for 8 hour time weighted average concentrations. With the exception of one area sample of petroleum distillate that exceeded 2000mg/m3 for a 4 hour period, all particulate and vapor concentrations were below the OSHA standards. The authors conclude that the controls in this facility appeared to be among the better in this industry.
