Description:An indepth survey of air contaminant controls was conducted at the Armstrong Rubber Company (SIC-3011), in Hanford, California on November 5 to 9, 1979. The survey was part of a NIOSH study to examine and document effective controls for air contaminants in the tire manufacturing industries. Air samples were collected for total particulates and respirable particulates. Controls for particulates were evaluated in the local exhaust ventilation for a bin loading station, and an energy intensive mixer, a canopy hood make up air system for a row of tire curing presses, and local exhaust ventilation at a tire repair station. The OSHA permissible exposure limits (PEL) for an 8 hour time weighted average for total particulates and respirable dusts are 15 and 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), respectively. For petroleum distillate, benzene (71432), and toluene (108883), the OSHA PEL is 2000, 30, and 650mg/m3, respectively. With the exception of one personal sample around a worker who was filling hopper bins, all particulate and vapor concentrations were below OSHA standards. The worker was using improper work practices in filling the bins. The authors conclude that the controls in the facility appear to be among the better controls for air contaminants in the industry.
