Description:In the United States, emergency medical services (EMS) are provided and primarily funded by local governments, which leads to a wide variation in the cost and quality of services. The Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention’s Home Rule-EMS project examines EMS-related laws and disparities in EMS provision, funding, and outcomes. This presentation will discuss case study findings included in the recently launched EMS Home Rule State Law Fact Sheet and several forthcoming products. The EMS Home Rule State Law Fact Sheet clarifies the influence that local government autonomy and property tax laws have on EMS and health outcomes. Several soon to be released products will describe EMS funding, organization, management, and relevant autonomy of local governments, including a focus on identified disparities in EMS funding and outcomes.
