Description:Reporting criteria: Hantavirus disease (disease caused by either HPS or non-HPS hantavirus infection) is a nationally notifiable condition. CDC monitors notifiable conditions at the national level to understand where diseases are occurring, how they can be prevented, and which groups are most heavily impacted. Hantavirus disease is a reportable condition in many states and territories. In these jurisdictions, healthcare providers, hospitals, or laboratories must report hantavirus disease cases to their local health departments. Specific requirements for who must report cases and when vary by jurisdiction.
Case notification: The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) designates hantavirus disease as a nationally notifiable condition. If a patient meets confirmed case criteria for hantavirus infection, CSTE requests that information about the patient and disease be submitted to CDC.
Reporting methods: Health departments should report general information about the patient and disease to CDC through the NNDSS using National Electronic Telecommunications System for Surveillance (NETSS) messages or the generic message mapping guide. Jurisdictional health departments can directly report cases via 1CDP through Secure Access Management Services (SAMS) credentialing. To request 1CDP access, for more information about the system, or if there are other surveillance-related questions, health departments can contact CDC's Viral Special Pathogens Branch at spathinfo@cdc.gov.
Report forms: Health departments may also report hantavirus disease to the CDC using the Hantavirus disease Case Report Form (CRF) that can be completed electronically. While rare, hantavirus disease can often cause severe illness and the CRF allows us to collect more detailed epidemiological, clinical, and diagnostic information that is not otherwise reported to NNDSS. Collecting a more detailed record for each confirmed hantavirus case allows us to examine and identify factors associated with hantavirus infection over time in the U.S. Completed forms can be securely emailed or faxed to CDC through the contacts listed on the form.
