Description:The effects of chronic carbon-disulfide (75150) (CS2) exposure on the peripheral nervous system (PNS) were investigated in viscose rayon factory workers. A cohort of 156 male workers was used. A composite of 233 males from an artificial fiber factory was used for comparison. PNS effects were evaluated in the ulnar and peroneal nerves using measurements of maximum motor nerve conduction velocity and distal latency. The sensory conduction velocity was measured in the sural nerve. Medical history questionnaires were also analyzed to assess prevalence of symptoms related to PNS impairment. Exposed workers were divided into high, medium, and low groups according to mean CS2 exposures of 7.6, 4.1, and 1.0 parts per million (ppm). The mean CS2 exposure obtained for the comparison group was 0.2ppm. Industrial hygiene records showed that the rayon workers had been exposed to CS2 for an average of 12.1 years, with exposures below 20ppm. Both sural and peroneal conduction velocity measurements were significantly reduced in CS2 exposed workers; the latter reduction was dose related. Distal latency, residual latency, and muscle or nerve action potential amplitudes did not differ significantly in the study groups. There was a significant reduction in the ratio of amplitudes of muscle action potentials measured during peroneal nerve stimulation. There were no significant differences in prevalence of symptoms between the CS2 exposed groups and the comparison group. The authors conclude that symptoms of peripheral nerve polyneuritis are not manifested at CS2 exposure concentrations below 10ppm. [Description provided by NIOSH]
