Description:The relevant basic anatomy and pathology of peripheral nerve are reviewed and correlated with the clinico-pathological phenomena observed in some occupational neuropathies. The majority of occupational neuropathies are caused by neurotoxins in the work area and the clinico-pathological profiles indicate that they conform to the axonal type. Occupational neuropathies occurring subsequent to exposure to n-hexane (110543), acrylamide (79061), methyl-n-butyl- ketone, (591786) and 2,5-hexanedione (110134) are discussed in some detail. The most prominent feature in the clinical neurology of the hexacarbon neuropathies is the insidious onset of the progressive distal weakness and sensory loss in the lower extremities. Also mentioned are neuropathies induced by carbon-disulfide (75150) and o- cresyl-phosphate (78308). [Description provided by NIOSH]
