Description:Spinning frame noise sources in textile mill spinning rooms were investigated. Noises ranged from 90 to 100 decibels relative to the A weighted scale (dBA), and a reduction to below 90dBA or a possible 85dBA level was attempted. Source modification and narrow band frequency noise analysis techniques were used. Noise was measured while the machines were in full operation, ends down, bare spindles, tapes dropped, and vacuum system only modes, and when not operating. Vibration spectra from machine surfaces were used to identify or confirm source contributions to the acoustic spectra. Field data were tape recorded and analyzed in the lab with a line analyzer and ensemble average. The noise generating parts of a spinning machine were identified as the ring traveler, spindle, bobbin, drive cylinder, drive tape, idler pulley, and the gears. The authors recommend that machinery design include efforts to isolate bearings from radiating surfaces; rotating components such as drive and idler pulleys be made as large as possible to operate at the slowest possible rotational speeds; and damping be used to prevent ringing of pulleys and spindles.
