Description:Cost factors resulting from compliance with the NIOSH noise standard of 90 decibels relative to the A-weighted scale (dBA) in the textile spinning industry were examined. A model was developed for calculating the economic impact on spinning operations based on the cost of noise control, expected life of noise control equipment, and the annual production cost of the particular textile. The authors conclude that the long term economic impact of industry compliance with the 90dBA standard will be relatively slight. Because of possible cash flow problems, the authors recommend that the impact be assessed on an individual facility basis rather than on an industry wide basis and that assessments include consideration of the financial position of the company, market conditions, and the life expectancy of existing machinery. They also recommend that noise modifications be tailored to the specific dimensional requirements of individual machine modes. [Description provided by NIOSH]
