Description:The database found in the title publication (USPHS Publication No. 149) was described. Research included dates from 1906 through 1984, made this the largest database on this topic in the world. The PHS- 149 Series has been used as a major information tool. The database contained 13 volumes with data on 7,500 chemical substances for which long term bioassays have been performed. A separate volume of Cumulative Indexes contained 13,923 chemical names and 3,874 CAS Registry Numbers with the accession numbers of each volume of PHS- 149. Over 600 scientific journals were scanned on a regular basis for articles relevant to this database. Relevant articles were analyzed to identify pertinent data and record it for entry. The database not only provided a structured and detailed presentation of data, it also enabled scientists to gain insight into the mechanisms by chemically induced carcinogenesis and predict the effects of untested compounds. Some of the chemicals tested have been found in the workplace and others in the general environment. [Description provided by NIOSH]
