Description:The retention and distribution of cadmium (7440439), zinc (7440666), and copper (7440508) are measured as a function of exposure level and time as part of a study to determine the binding of cadmium ions to cellular components of the lung and kidney after inhalation of cadmium oxide aerosol. Animal tissues are analyzed with the aid of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The retention of cadmium is found to be related to the ambient concentration within the inhalation chamber. Homogenization of each organ, followed by subcellular fractionation through differential centrifugation, is used to demonstrate the steady increase in concentration of all three metals within the cytoplasm of the cell. The concentrations of the metals in each organ are primarily related to the length of the exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
