Description:Worker inhalation exposure to polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in three different types of process units was monitored at nine petroleum refineries. PAH concentrations were determined on the basis of 250 personal, area, and refinery upwind boundary samples. The geometric mean of the cumulative PAH concentration exposure for personal samples was 11.4 micrograms per cubic meter for the fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCUs) and 11.1 micrograms for the delayed coker units. Detectable quantities of several PAHs were found in the highest concentrations, while the production of needle coke was associated with higher PAH exposures than the production of the more common sponge coke. The PAHs collected at the FCCUs and the asphalt processing units were associated with the respirable fraction particulates, while up to 50 percent of the PAHs found downwind of the coke cutting were associated with particulates greater than 10 micrometers. The author concludes that the workers at FCCU units and delayed coker units are clearly exposed to PAHs. [Description provided by NIOSH]
