Description:Carbonaceous materials, such as coal, tar, petroleum residues, oils, chars, etc., can be converted to hydrocarbon gases of high calorific value in the c1-c3 molecular weight range at 350 deg.-450 Deg. C and 1,000-8,000 psig by use of large amounts of dry alcl3 as catalyst. The weight ratio of alcl3 to the carbonaceous material is 0.5-2.0:1. The material should be dry and pulverized. The maximum yield of hydrocarbon gases is obtained from the petroleum residue at 450 deg. C. Hydrogasification catalyzed by alcl3 increases with increasing hydrogen content and decreasing oxygen content of the material. [Description provided by NIOSH]
