Description:Brief reports are summarized on three plants that use or manufacture alkanes - Buckeye-Cellouse Corporation of Memphis, Tennessee and Anderson-Clayton Company of Jackson, Mississippi, which extract seed oil from soybeans and cotton seed, and Standard Oil of Ohio in Toledo, which produces alkanes necessary for the blending of gasoline. The three field surveys were conducted to assure that recommendations in the criteria document are effective, practical, and realistic, and thus based on companies that currently manufacture or use alkanes. The recommendations include medical surveillance: pre-employment and annual examinations with attention to the skin, sinuses and to the respiratory and nervous systems; labeling: warning against potential respiratory and skin irritation upon contact with liquid or vapor forms and against flammability, with the locations of respirators noted; personal protective equipment: use of closed systems and, for maintenance and repair, use of self-contained or supplied air respirators; informing employees of hazards and emergency procedures; work practices: routine monitoring of the closed systems for leaks, handling and storage of containers appropriate for flammable liquids, and adherence to electrical codes; sanitation: availability of locker rooms and shower facilities, prohibition of eating and drinking and storing food in work area. All three companies were in accordance with the recommendations. It is noted that no environmental sampling was done at any of the companies except for the use of combustable gas meters, which were used to check for leaks during sampling or during repair inside closed systems.
