Validation of design criteria for recirculation of industrial exhaust air systems

  The need for validation of recommended design criteria for the recirculation of industrial exhaust air systems was examined. Central topics of this report included the purpose of validation efforts, the necessity of a workable set of guidelines in industry, a description of the investigative approach used to validate guidelines, a description of the types of industries in which the evaluations were being utilized, and a closer examination of the applications of model parameters to one of the industrial situations. Phase one evaluations included preliminary investigations, field evaluations leading to recirculation decisions, and system design and installation. Phase two evaluations were undertaken to evaluate a recirculation system that was already installed and operating and consisted of a preliminary investigation, field sampling, and a system evaluation. A status report of efforts to evaluate recirculation in three types of industries, such as a foundry, a woodworking facility, and a lead battery manufacturing facility, was described. While the evaluations were ongoing and incomplete, initial evaluations indicated favorable results. Committee member comments on the content of this paper were reported.
