Description:An industrial consultant's view on air recirculation was presented. Influences on the viewpoint of industry towards recirculation, such as state and local government regulations, fuel efficiency, and worker health and safety, were reviewed. While prior opinions were deemed to be restrictive, newer approaches were less limited and allowed for the recirculation of air contaminants other than just nuisance dusts. The author suggests that if industry is to be given guidelines and assistance in the recirculation of air, there is a need for practical working information along with the listing of contaminants that can be recirculated, a cataloging of various types of air cleaners, a summary of design features of monitoring equipment, and a model for recirculation. Needed practical information includes the analysis of air contaminants encountered, recommendations of continuous air monitoring equipment, recommendations of the appropriate air cleaning devices, cost and energy saving estimates for each system, and preparation of a design guide for an economically feasible prototype system.
