Air recirculation from foundry operations

• Description:
  The present state of the art of foundry air recirculation and engineering efforts aimed at the installation of properly engineered air recirculation systems were described. In a survey conducted by The American Foundrymen's Society, it was observed that the majority of recirculation systems that had been tried focused on cleaning room operations; however, none of the reported installations were deemed to represent good engineering practice. Some foundries had also attempted to recirculate air from different operations without success. Based on the survey results, it was decided that a demonstration recirculation system should be installed on the cleaning room exhaust utilizing emission characterization; filtration equipment specification; monitoring equipment specification; integration of a complete system; building and installation; and performance testing. Five foundries agreed to emissions testing. Parameters included total particulate concentration, particle size distribution, and particulate chemical analysis. The demonstration system was due to be installed in a foundry upon completion of emissions testing. Committee member comments on the content of this paper were reported.
