Description:The consistency of response by ultraviolet (UV) and fluorescence detection in a series of urea derivatives prepared from 9- methylamino-methylanthracene (73356191) (MAMA) and 11 isocyanate compounds was evaluated. Aliphatic, aromatic, mono-isocyanates and diisocyanates were included to determine possible structure and response relationships. The authors conclude that the use of MAMA as a derivatizing agent, along with analysis by high pressure liquid chromatography with UV absorbance and fluorescence detection offered a promising approach to the identification and quantitation of airborne total reactive isocyanate group. The UV absorbing properties of a series of MAMA derivatives was remarkably consistent and primarily dependent on the number of MAMA units in the resulting compound. The fluorescence response was quite variable and correlated in large part with structural properties. [Description provided by NIOSH]
