Description:The applicability of air sampling methods for aniline (62533) to its substituted derivatives, o-toluidine (95534), N,N-dimethylaniline (121697), o-anisidine (90040), o-chloraniline (95512), and mixed xylidines, was investigated. Aniline air sampling employed a tube containing two 50 milligram sections of 45:60 mesh silica gel. The effectiveness of the first sorbent section was described by the quantity of material collected before breakthrough to the second sorbent section. Breakthroughs were determined by 8 hour sampling at a rate of 200 milliliters per minute at constant concentrations and by the bulk addition method. Desorption efficiency measurements approximated 100 percent for all six compounds tested. Interferences did not occur using water or benzene as the vehicle and were less than one percent when toluene or xylene were used as the vehicle. Comments related to the use of two sets of standard charcoal sampling tubes each containing xylene, benzene, trichloroethylene, chloroform, ethylene-dichloride, dioxane, and carbon-tetrachloride are presented. Concerns discussed included the use of urethane as the sorbent material, coloration of the CS2 eluent, simultaneous analysis of samples, the inclusion of blank tubes from the same batch of charcoal, sample retention on the first charcoal section, and proper operation of the flame ionization detector.
