Description:A systematic, quantitative evaluation was conducted of an improved cold trap inlet for high speed gas chromatography that may be useful for reducing analysis times in many routine applications. Data concerning trapping efficiency were presented for a variety of organics, trap heating characteristics, and chromatographic performances. The system could be added to most capillary gas chromatographic systems and, in many, cases would allow the analyst to shorten retention times with no loss of resolution or reproducibility. The system as described was a prototype cryofocusing system for producing narrow injection bands with 0.25 millimeter internal diameter columns. The gas cooled and electrically heated inlet produces injection bands with widths of about 10 to 20 milliseconds. In this study, the system was evaluated using mixtures of common organics including alkanes, aromatics, alcohols, ketones, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Quantitative trapping and reinjection was achieved for all tested compounds. Coefficients of variation were less than 3% for peak area and less than 0.2% for retention time. Base line separation of simple mixture was achieved with retention times of less than 10 seconds. [Description provided by NIOSH]
