Pneumatic dust control in grain elevators: guidelines for design operation and maintenance.

• Description:
  Guidelines for operating and maintaining pneumatic dust collecting systems for grain elevators are given. An efficient dust control program, mechanical housekeeping, manual housekeeping, and methods for minimizing the generation of dust are outlined. The mechanical components of a pneumatic system are discussed. Guidelines for selecting an exhaust fan are given. Dust control in problem areas such as bucket elevators, scales, truck and rail dumps, and distributors is discussed. The use of flex hoses and hoods, and deadbox spouts and hoods, in controlling dust during truck and rail loading is discussed. A formal system for qualifying contractors to design and update pneumatic dust collection systems is proposed. The various instruments and associated hardware for monitoring and controlling pneumatic dust collection systems are discussed. Use of the instruments and their position in a pneumatic system are outlined. Several methods are described for determining the effect of air velocity on whole grain. These include the air velocity to suspend a whole grain, air velocity to separate foreign material from grain, and inlet velocities which will lift whole grains. [Description provided by NIOSH]
