Description:A computer assisted design (CAD) procedure for ventilation systems is reviewed. Industrial ventilation hoods for grinding operations and current design procedures are described. Present design is primitive, and the need for new design procedures is stressed. Previous work in CAD to calculate air velocities, grinding particle trajectories, and concentrations in the booth is cited. The range of capture velocities is tabulated. Equations are developed for velocity difference equations, and velocity profiles. Equations are derived for particle trajectories (including equations of motion), and modeling of the grinding source. Velocity profiles are given for air velocities within booths under various conditions, particle trajectories, and particle concentrations. A computer graphics program is described for the computation of node location, size of booth, location and size of the slot, and position of the operator. The author concludes that the velocity routine gives designers the air velocity distribution inside the grinding booth, allowing them to determine volumetric flow rate and adequate air velocities at critical locations. Better contaminant control is achieved with increased volumetric air flow rate. [Description provided by NIOSH]
