Description:The fibrogenic potentials of coal-slag (68476960) and copper slag (67711982) used as substitutes for silica (7631869) sand in abrasive blasting operations were assessed. Rats were administered 20 milligrams (mg) of coal or copper grit slag, airborne copper slag, or standard quartz, by intralobar instillation. All surviving animals were autopsied after 10 months. Pulmonary fibrosis was seen in the coal-slag treated animals but not in the copper slag treated group. Granulomas were seen in the lungs from all treatment groups. The authors note that chronic inhalation experiments using animal models are necessary to assess the biological response to silica sand substitutes until data becomes available on responses of workers exposed to slags.
