Description:This information profile on talc (14807966) lists its molecular structure, Chemical Abstracts Service number, Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances number, production and trends, uses, producer and user data, and biological effects of exposure to talc. Fibrous industrial talc causes pneumoconiosis often accompanied by chronic hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy in humans exposed for long times. In animals pure talc induces a cytogenic rather than fibrogenic effect on the lungs. Subchronic effects of exposure are discussed. Although some fibrogenic agents such as quartz (1317799) and tremolite (14567738) may have an additive effect on lung damage, some evidence has been found to suggest that pure talc inhibits the pathogenicity of quartz. The threshold limit value for fibrous talc is five fibers, exceeding five microns in length, per milliliter of air. The OSHA standard for fibrous talc is the same as that for asbestos.
