Chronic biological effects of methyl methacrylate vapor: II. Body and tissue weights, blood chemistries, and gross metabolic performance in the rat.

  The effects of chronic exposure to methyl-methacrylate vapor (80626) (MMA) were investigated. Rats were exposed to about 116 parts per million MMA for 7 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 3 months. Animals were deprived of food during exposure sessions. Daily food and water intake were measured, and excreta were collected and weighed. After the final exposure, animals were sacrificed. Blood samples were analyzed, terminal organ and body weights were recorded, and routine histopathological examination was performed. Compared to unexposed controls, MMA exposed rats did not differ in the amount of visceral or subcutaneous fat, or weight of whole body, adrenals, or epididymal and popliteal fat pads. Water and food intake, and water excretion also did not differ between treated and control animals. Average daily fecal excretion was greater in exposed rats. Treated animals had decreased serum bilirubin and increased total serum cholesterol. There was some inconclusive evidence of liver damage in the exposed rats. The authors conclude that MMA vapor exposure may produce changes in gastrointestinal motor performance. [Description provided by NIOSH]
