A summary of studies of occupational dioxin exposure under way at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

  Studies being conducted by NIOSH on workers exposed to 2,3,7,8- tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1746016) (TCDD) were summarized. Results from a completed study of workers in Missouri who reported occupational exposure to TCDD were presented. Of 19 individuals who had reported exposure, 16 were from a single chemical plant that made 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TCP), a feedstock for manufacture of butyl esters and hexachlorophene. The TCDD was generated as an unintended contaminant during TCP production, resulting in exposure of nine workers in the production area. Seven workers in nonproduction areas reported potential exposure. Three other workers were exposed at truck terminals sprayed for dust control with TCDD contaminated waste oils. Adipose tissue and serum were analyzed for TCDD. Adipose tissue levels of TCDD in the nine production workers ranged from 41.9 to 750 parts per trillion (ppt) (mean 246ppt). Levels in the seven nonproduction workers were 3.5 to 25.8ppt (mean 8.7ppt), while the levels in truckers ranged from 7.8 to 24.7ppt (mean 15.4ppt). The mean levels in workers from nonproduction areas was comparable to levels in unexposed persons. The adipose tissue to serum lipid correlation coefficient was 0.97. The authors conclude that workers assigned to production areas contaminated with TCDD have substantially elevated levels of TCDD compared to workers in other areas of the chemical factory.
