Description:Three cases of neuropathy are reported from an investigation by NIOSH of 26 spray painters using paint containing methyl-N-butyl- ketone (591786). All three workers had ample opportunity for both respiratory and skin absorption of the solvent and all three had symptoms of neuropathy within four months of each other. Triortho- cresyl-phosphate was ruled out as a cause of the neuropathy as was the elevated levels of lead in the blood in one case. In the absence of strict industrial hygiene controls, it is recommended that spray painting with methyl-N-butyl-ketone containing materials be avoided. [Description provided by NIOSH]
