Description:An environmental exposure survey was conducted at National Egg Products Company, Social Circle, Georgia to characterize the extent of employee exposure to egg protein and chlorine compounds as part of an evaluation of egg protein allergic sensitization and immunomodulation. The degree of exposure to aerosolized egg protein was characterized in each department. Both total nonspecific protein and specific egg proteins were determined using an immunoassay technique. The mass fraction of respirable size particles in the air was determined by size selective aerosol protein sampling. The transfer and egg breaking departments experienced the highest exposures to egg proteins. These departments had the greatest number of employees. Good agreement was obtained between the air monitoring results of total nonspecific protein and epitope specific egg proteins. Rarely was any chlorine (7782505) gas detected, and when it was detected it was primarily limited to the pasteurization department. It was noted that chloramine (127651) may have been present in most areas of the facility. The author recommends that cutaneous and respiratory exposures be reduced by improving skin protection and through changes in engineering.
