  Worker exposure to ethylene-dibromide (106934) (EDB) was investigated at three papaya packing and shipping facilities (SIC- placing standard 150 milligram activated charcoal tubes on the collar of each worker. These were connected by tubing to MDA Accuhaler and Du Pont sample pumps. For day 1 of sampling, sample splitters were used on certain pumps to obtain side by side samples drawn by the same pump. These duplicate samples were analyzed by an on site laboratory and by the NIOSH priority analysis laboratory. Samples were collected in the three facilities over a 3 day period. Blind spikes were submitted as a control on time and temperature effects. Blank samples were also prepared. Laboratory analysis was by gas chromatography. Spike results reflected the effects of time and temperature in shipment from Hawaii to Massachusetts. All spikes were roughly comparable and showed a recovery of about 68 percent. Overnight laboratory results were adjusted upward by 72 percent and NIOSH laboratory results by 68 percent. The average exposure to EDB for a packer/sorter was measured at 86.5, 102.5, and 66.2 parts per billion (ppb) at the three facilities. EDB exposure for a forklift operator was measured at 89.3, 124.7, and 148.4ppb. EDB exposure for a fumigator was found to be 28.1, 52.2, and 116.7ppb. Six out of 38 samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended amount of 130ppb. The author concludes that there is a chronic, low concentration exposure to EDB for all workers in the papaya industry in Hilo. The amount of exposure approaches the NIOSH standard. An epidemiological study of reproductive and cytogenetic effects of EDB exposure on these workers is recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
