Description:Dust related occupational health problems in small rural industries in the People's Republic of China (PRC) were discussed. General problems associated with factories in small rural townships in the PRC were summarized. The results of industrial hygiene surveys of ten perlite processing mills in West Liaoning Province, PRC were discussed. The results indicated that occupational dust exposures in the facilities was very high and that exposed workers had a high prevalence of radiographic abnormalities that could be correlated with air flow defects. The pneumotoxicity of perlite dust was confirmed in an investigation in which rats injected intratracheally with 50 milligrams perlite dust developed pulmonary fibrosis 12 to 18 months later. The results of these investigations have led to proposals for reducing exposures in the mills. These included using hydraulic processing equipment, enclosing processing lines and applying local ventilation for processes not suitable for wet processing, and utilizing administrative controls where feasible. It was noted that since most small township industries do not have specialists trained in industrial ventilation, local programs that provide training in ventilation are needed.
