Description:Problems associated with delivering health care to college students were discussed. The discussion was based on the author's experience with a college health service. The service provided health care for a college with 2500 dormitory students and its employees. Administrative problems were discussed. These include maintaining communication with all components of the administration such as the academic deans, the housing and food services, the Athletic Director, the Personnel Director, and the Office for Environmental Health and Safety while maintaining the confidentiality of the patients' medical records, recruiting staff members, and financing the health services. The organizational structure of the service was discussed. The service operated an outpatient clinic, a ten bed infirmary, a mental health clinic, and a health education and outreach clinic. Each floor of every dormitory also had a student who was designated the health aide. They were given a first aid kit which included commonly used over the counter medications. This helped to alleviate overcrowding in the health clinic due to very minor problems. The service also provided health supervision to the athletic program. It was noted that in response to the increasing problem of alcohol abuse, the health service operated a program directed toward two goals: assisting employees whose job performance had deteriorated; and educating students. Ethical and professional relationships as they apply to confidentiality, privileged communication, minority rights, informed consent, and reportable conditions were discussed.
