Problems in the management of college students' health.

  Problems in managing college student health programs were discussed. Concerns drawn from the author's experience in managing a college health service were described. It was noted that college health services have been involved in disease prevention and health promotion long before national attention made these programs popular. Programs of immunization, disease control, and early detection of disease have met with some success; however, programs emphasizing health promotion such as smoking cessation, weight maintenance, improving cardiovascular fitness, and using alcohol intelligently have produced disappointing results. It was emphasized that increasing student involvement is considered vital in creating an effective health promotion program. Mental health and college students were discussed. Because college students are introduced to new stresses and normal stressors are usually magnified, a good mental health program becomes a very important component of a college health service. The goals of a college mental health program were listed. The role of sports medicine in a college health service was considered. The goals of a comprehensive health program developed by the Fifth National Conference on Health in College Communities were described.
