Occupational medical support of a research hospital.

  The Occupational Medical Service of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland, was discussed. The service provided health care to approximately 4000 employees of the NIH Clinical Center and support to the administrative and laboratory missions of NIH. The staff consisted of 23 persons including five fulltime physicians, 11 nurses, two occupational medical technicians, and one laboratory technician. Administrative aspects of the service were discussed. The components of the service's program were described. The program's components consisted of: preemployment medical examinations; monitoring and providing limited care for nonoccupational illnesses, especially infectious diseases; evaluating and treating occupational injuries and diseases; providing periodic evaluations of patient care and laboratory personnel who were exposed to recognized environmental hazards; providing health education and counseling including supervisory training for recognizing and handling alcohol and drug abuse; and maintaining adequate employee medical records and reporting systems. The author notes that the NIH Occupational Medical Service meets all of the recommendations of the NIOSH Hospital Occupational Health Services study.
