Description:Establishing an employee health service in a reluctant (cost conscious) hospital was discussed. Because of the emphasis on cost containment and the Federal government's proposed ceiling on hospital price increases, most hospitals are unwilling to spend money on employee health care without having evidence that better patient care will result. A procedure for convincing hospital administrations that employee health care will be cost effective was outlined. The procedure involves retrieving data on work time lost due to injury and illness, time lost due to travel and waiting time to visit an off site medical facility, overtime wages to cover absenteeism, wages for unjustifiable illnesses, and abuse of sick pay, and payments for workers' compensation claims. The author claims that the data should convince the administration that the losses can be effectively reduced by establishing a comprehensive health service that is readily available to the employees. The experience of the author in developing and expanding a health program for hospital employees was discussed. The author recommends that a planning committee be formed both for initiating the health program and then later for administration of new policies. The author concludes that obtaining administration support is the key factor in successfully developing an employee health program at a hospital.
