Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for acrylamide (79061) at American Cyanamid Company (SIC-2869, SIC- 2899), Linden, New Jersey in February, 1984. Company medical and industrial hygiene and safety programs were reviewed. Personal time weighted average (TWA) acrylamide exposures ranged from 0.01 to 0.39 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3). The OSHA TWA standard for acrylamide is 0.3mg/m3. Exposures were highest for maintenance workers and employees working with dry acrylamide. Area air acrylamide concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 6.87mg/m3, the highest exposures occurring in the bag room and other enclosed areas. Detectable acrylamide concentrations were found in the lunch room. All new employees were given physical examinations. Current employees were given biannual physicals up to age 40 and annual physicals thereafter. Air and biological monitoring for acrylamide was conducted by the company every 6 months. All employees were required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory protective equipment in areas with elevated acrylamide concentrations. The author concludes that there is low background acrylamide contamination at the facility. Recommendations include closer monitoring of maintenance workers and more frequent washing of environmental surfaces and equipment.
