Description:Because the accuracy of all sampling instruments is dependent on the precision of measurement of the sample volume, sample mass or sample concentration involved, information is given on instruments and techniques used in calibrating air sampling equipment. Each element of a sampling system should be calibrated accurately prior to initial field use, and protocols should be established for periodic recalibration. Instruments and techniques discussed include: spirometers, frictionless piston meters, wet-test meters, dry-gas meters, positive displacement meters, rotameters, variable-head meters, orifice meters, venturi meters, pressure transducers, critical-flow orifice, by-pass flow indicators, velocity pressure meters, heated element anemometers, thermal meters, mixture metering, and ion-flow meters.
