Description:The oldest measure of the health status of a population is the death rate. Historically it has been quite usefuI in documenting progress (or lack thereof) in public health and medicine. For example, the death rate from tuberculosis decreased from 194 per 100,000 population in 1900 to 46 per 100,000 in 1940 to 3 per 100,000 in 1970. On the other hand, the death rate from breast cancer has actually in- creased from 48 per 100,000 in 1940 to 56 per 100,000 in 1970.
