Description:In this report the 1980 National Master Facility Inventory Survey of nursing and related care homes is described. Statistics are presented on the numbers of homes, beds, residents, and employees, along with occupancy and turnover rates. These variables are categorized by such characteristics as ownership groups, bed size groups, and geographic regions. Additional topics covered in this report include survey procedures, problems encountered, editing procedures, and qualifications of the data.
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) first conducted the National Master Facility Inventory (NMFI)
Survey in 1963 and continued in 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, and 1978. Prior to 1978, the inventory included hospitals, nursing and related care homes, and other types of in-patient health facilities including, for example, homes for the blind, deaf, mentally retarded, and emotionally disturbed, The 1978 and 1980 NMFI surveys have data on only nursing and related care homes. Data for hospitals are now obtained directly from the American Hospital Association (AHA). For convenience, this report will use the terms “nursing and related care homes” and “nursing homes” interchangeably.
