Description:This report presents information on the characteristics of hospices and home health agencies in the United States. The data are from the 1991 National Health Provider Inventory (NHPI). The NHPI was a mail survey of nursing homes, board and care homes, home health agencies, and hospices. However, the discussions in this report are limited to home health agencies and hospices.
The NHPI was formerly called the National Master Facility Inventory (NMFI) and the Inventory of Long-Term Care Places (IETCP). Before the inclusion of hospices and home health agencies, the inventory had been limited to inpatient facilities, Because of its recent expansion to include hospices and home health agencies the name was changed to NHPI.
