Description:Cough was the principal reason for an estimated 29,059,242 visits to office-based physicians during 1977-78. Cough ranked fifth among all principal reasons for visits but was the second most frequent symptomatic reason given by patients (table 1).
The estimates in this report are based on data coIlected in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), a probability sample survey conducted yearly by the Division of Health Resources Utilization Statistics of the National Center for Health Statistics.
