This report presents statistics based on data collected through the National Hospital Discharge Survey, a continuous survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics since 1965. In 1977 data were abstracted from the face sheets of medical records of approxi mately 224,000 patients discharged from 423

short-stay non-Federal hospitals. These data ere used to produce estimates of hospital utili zation by an estimated 35.9 million inpatients (excIuding newborn infants) in the United States.
