Description:This report presents provisional statistics on an estimated 18,300 nursing homes in the coter minous United States. The data are from the 1977 National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS). This nationwide sample survey of nursing homes–their residents, their discharges, and their staff–was conducted by the NationaI Center for Health Statistics from May through December 1977. The survey is the second in an ongoing NNHS system. The first survey was con ducted between August 1973 and April 1974. The estimates presented here are provisional, since they are based on a subsample of about 340 of the 1,700 facilities in the national survey.
