  Industrial hygiene problems were studied for a twofold purpose: to assess the character of operations in terms of immediate hazards to research personnel, and to gain knowledge about future stresses and air-contamination hazards in the manufacturing and service industries. Other industrial research briefly reported centers on diversified experimentation from the development of a colorimetric analysis for the silica content of silicotic patients to a study of the feasibility of introducing learning machines into schools. Some hazards research in industrial installations include that associated with the carcinogen, betanaphthylamine, severe dermatitis from handling acetone, improper exhaust ventilation, and improper handling of various chemicals, by both technical personnel and maintenance and janitorial workmen. Proper inspection procedures are advised, and it is noted that many safeguards are available commercially, but not consistently applied. [Description provided by NIOSH]
