  • Description:
Serum cholesterol data obtained from the findings of the Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES), 1971-74, present an op- portunity to reexamine the level of serum cholesterol of the U.S. population aged 18-74 years. EarIier determinations of serum cholesterol levels were made in the first cycle of the HeaIth Examination Survey (HES), 1960-62, in order to provide reference data for the general population of the United States. This was prompted by the epidemiologic studies associating levels of total blood cholesterol with the risk of development of coronary heart disease.

Field data collection operations for the first HANES survey were started in April 1971 and completed in June 1974.
