Environmental Epidemiologic Investigations in the Styrene-Butadiene Rubber Production Industry

  A review was provided of the current literature concerning cohort mortality studies of the styrene (100425) 1,3-butadiene (106990) industry. A detailed study was undertaken of the industry beginning in 1976 following the leukemia deaths of two men employed at adjacent styrene/butadiene rubber facilities in Texas. The facilities began production in 1943. The retrospective mortality portion of the study began on January 1, 1943 in the first facility and on January 1, 1950 for the second facility. Only white males with 6 months of nonmanagement and nonadministrative employment were included in the study. The first facility had 1,356 subjects alive and 252 deceased with 54 lost to followup. The second facility had 980 subjects alive, 80 deceased, and 34 lost to followup. The results of the study indicated a nonsignificant excess of death in the overall category of lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues in the first facility, nine versus the 5.79 expected. Most of this was due to an approximate doubling of the number of deaths due to leukemia, five versus the 2.47 expected. No appreciable excesses were noted in the second facility.
