Description:Injury remains the leading cause of death and hospitalization for Americans in the first half of life. More Americans ages 1–44 die from injuries and violence—including overdose, suicide, motor vehicle crashes, drowning, and homicide—than from any other cause. Together, injuries and violence cost the United States more than $4 trillion each year.
As part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) applies data-driven public health strategies—similar to those used to combat infectious diseases—to prevent injuries and violence nationwide. With world-class data systems, expert guidance, emergency response capabilities, and strong partnerships with state and local jurisdictions, NCIPC delivers essential public health services unmatched by any other federal agency.
