Description:This chapter introduces and describes the precursors to, and evolution of, research and applications to enhance worker well-being and work-life satisfaction. The social historical context is provided throughout this chapter to describe the context which pushed forward the evolution of research about occupational health issues. We first describe worker well-being as a somewhat neglected topic in the field of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology, as evidenced in this volume where this is only one of two new chapters in this 2nd edition of the history of I-O psychology. With the development of the field of Occupational Health Psychology, worker well-being and work-life satisfaction have continued to advance and have proven to be important areas of focus, with historical roots in Taylorism and the development of unions. Given the impact of the workplace on worker well-being and work-life satisfaction, and the effects of worker well-being and work-life satisfaction being felt not only with regard to the health of workers, but also with its impact on the bottom line of corporations, understanding the historical context is critical for also visualizing the future of the field. Thus, this chapter ends with a discussion of lessons learned from history and future directions. [Description provided by NIOSH]
