Description:An investigation of the effects of an acute 180 degree reversal of the sleep/wake cycle on luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion was studied in three pubertal boys and the data collected was combined with that from the study of a fourth boy. Two 24 hour periods of blood sampling every 20 minutes were carried out in each of the boys, aged 14 to 15 years. The first study was conducted during a normal sleep/wake cycle and the second was during an acute sleep/wake reversal for three subjects and a sleep delay pattern for one. Polygraphically defined nocturnal sleep was associated with a marked rise in plasma LH concentration. After acute reversal of the sleep/wake cycle, LH secretion was clearly enhanced during the daytime sleep period. The LH plasma concentration increased immediately following sleep onset. These findings support a strong correlation between sleep stage and LH secretion in pubertal subjects. In the comparison study the daytime waking period was characterized by low concentrations of LH and relatively small episodic fluctuations. The plasma concentrations of LH remained elevated during nocturnal waking, as opposed to daytime waking, showing that acute sleep/wake reversal did not eliminate increased LH secretion at night in pubertal subjects.
