Twenty-four-hour luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone secretory patterns in gonadal dysgenesis.

Description:Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured at 20 minute intervals for 24 hours in three patients, aged 12, 18 and 26, with untreated gonadal dysgenesis. In the 12 year old girl, the LH and FSH secretory activities were augmented synchronous with sleep, similar to normal pubertal girls. However, gonadotropin levels were in the castrate range. For the 18 year old girl, a statistically significant higher mean LH concentration was noted during sleep as compared to waking hours, but this difference was less significant than it had been in the 12 year old girl. The 26 year old woman did not show increased LH or FSH secretory activity during sleep, which is similar to what has been reported in normal women. This finding suggested that in gonadal dysgenesis the pubertal gonadotropin program was initiated and terminated in a normal qualitative way, but gonadotropin concentrations were in the castrate range. Other researchers have indicated the plasma LH concentrations did not reach castrate levels until after 11 years of age. This probably represents the initiation of the LH program at the usual chronological age in spite of abnormal ovarian function. [Description provided by NIOSH]
