Description:Literature was reviewed on the developmental neurotoxicity of the following industrial solvents after exposure in-utero: carbon- disulfide (75150), chloroform (67663), formaldehyde (50000), glycol- ethers, methyl-chloroform (71556), methyl-n-butyl-ketone (591786), methylene-chloride (75092), perchloroethylene (127184), n-propanol (71238), and tertiary-butanol (75650). All of these solvents were administered during pregnancy, and functional testing was carried out on the offspring. Species of test animal, dose, route and time of exposure, and the postnatal functions evaluated were presented, as well as observed effects. Although comparatively few solvents have been evaluated for developmental neurotoxicology, most of these solvents produced significant differences from controls in animals. Many studies used the inhalation route of exposure, which is the route most often encountered in occupational or environmental exposure. Most studies extended the exposure for the majority of gestation of rats. Additional testing of industrial solvents was strongly recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
